Left out of the market
Letter by Jeff Fiedler, Housing for the Aged Action Group, published in the Age Thursday 11 June.
Older people do not have the option of getting a "well paid job", with some paying up to 80 per cent of their age pension in the private rental market. It is the height of hypocrisy to blame the electorate for not coping with the housing crisis when the Abbott government doesn't even have a housing minister in cabinet. They have no housing plan and have cut funding to vital homelessness services. This policy vacuum has reversed, by many years, the hard work of dedicated community agencies who respond daily to desperate people who are seeking an affordable home. We need a national housing strategy.
