The national Ageing on the Edge – Older Persons Homelessness Prevention Project is holding a half day forum on the renting crisis facing older people in NSW. The forum will include the latest research on older renters in NSW and hear from older people and advocates about the housing challenges faced by older people on low incomes. Attendees are invited to work towards solutions. Morning tea will be provided.

• Ageing on the Edge NSW Report

The Ageing on the Edge Project Report Launch analysing the situation for older private renters in NSW based on the latest 2016 Census data. The report will also focus on what services and housing are needed to help older people out of crisis and enable them to successfully age-in-place.

• Housing, home ownership and the governance of ageing

This report analyses Commonwealth aged care policy and the implied assumption that home ownership is a requirement to ageing well. However, many older Australians are locked out of home ownership and therefore the benefits of the aged care system.

• Council on the Ageing NSW Housing Survey

This presentation will provide the preliminary findings of the Council on the Ageing’s 2017 survey of thousands of older people in NSW that asks the question: “What are your housing issues?”

• Towards a National Older Persons Housing Strategy

An audience participation session led by a panel comprising housing advocates and older people affected by the rental housing crisis will discuss the topics “What needs to be done” and “What does an older persons housing strategy look like?”
