Call to Action on Residential Tenancies Reforms
We are calling on our members to contact their members about the Residential Tenancies Act.
The RTA bill has passed the lower house and now needs to pass the upper house to become law.
The final Upper House vote is likely to be in the week of 18-20 September with the main debate and second reading vote happening a fortnight earlier in the week of 4-6 September.
Right now the Make Renting Fair campaign believes they have 20 out of 21 votes in support of the bill, including Labor, Greens and Fiona Patten, who have all expressed their support.
The final vote has to come from Rachel Carling-Jenkins (Western Metropolitan), James Purcell (Western Victoria), Daniel Young (Northern Victoria) or Jeff Bourman (Eastern Victoria).
The one thing that we need everyone to do in the next few days is write to the most relevant of these MPs expressing your support for the laws and seeking a meeting to discuss them before the upper house vote.
If you want to contact these politicians and ask them to support the Bill, that would be fantastic! We think personal stories about the impact of caravan park closures, issues for older renters and the impact of family violence or elder abuse (there are stronger provisions in the Bill for people experiencing family violence) may be a powerful way to persuade them to support the Bill and make it law.
