A report released today based on the latest 2016 Census is showing a rapidly rising number of older people at risk of homelessness in South Australia. This research, a partnership between Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG) and The University of Adelaide’s Centre for Housing Urban and Regional Planning (CHURP) and funded by The Wicking Trust, has found that a significant number of older people in the private rental market in South Australia are living in housing poverty.

The NSW Ageing on the Edge Reference Group met Thursday 24th August at the NSW Federation of Housing Associations. About 15 key agencies attended the meeting covering the spectrum from housing, homelessness, aged care, seniors rights, elder abuse, seniors issues and many other perspectives.

Women over 65 are one of the fastest growing groups of people experiencing homlessness. A recent episode of SBS insight (Women on the Edge 22nd August 2017) covered this issue and explored the experiences of women struggling to secure a home of thier own. Among these women was Doris Perkins, a client of HAAGs Home At Last service.

Fiona York is presenting to the 4th International Conference on Ageing in a Foreign Land about HAAG's Multicultural Community Work projects.

Council on the Ageing's National Policy Forum will place the spotlight on what housing means in later life and explore current policy issues and future trends around housing for older Australians. Jeff Fiedler will be speaking on behalf of the Ageing on the Edge - National Action Project about actions we need to take to prevent homelessness amongst older people.

Ageing on the Edge - National Action Project, along with a coalition of organisations, have begun a campaign to improve the dire situation facing older tenants in New South Wales.

Through operating our Home at Last service in Victoria we know that things are tough for older people in the private rental market. We've heard that things are bad for older people in New South Wales but we need to know more about how this affects the lives of people everyday.

Ageing on the Edge – National Action Project is underway in New South Wales, with key groups coming together to plan for action. A Reference Group Meeting was held on the 18th of May the NSW Federation of Housing Associations and was attended by representatives of Homelessness NSW, The Mercy Foundation, Aged Care Services Australia, The Tenants Union, The Benevolent Society as well as Family and Community Services.

Exciting new partnerships are developing for the Project in Tasmania. This week Jeff Fiedler visited Hobart to begin networking and developing links with key housing and older persons organisations.

During the trip Jeff attended an event on May 2 called The Big Squeeze organised by Anglicare. The event highlighted information from their recent national Rental Affordability Snapshot.

 As part of the NSW government’s Ageing Strategy 2016-20, Jeff Fiedler gave a presentation to the Rental Options Roundtable for Older People that was attended by 50 key representatives of agencies in NSW including the Minister for Ageing Tanya Davies.
