The NSW Ageing on the Edge Coalition brings together 150 organisations and supporters. The members of the Coalition are advocates for change, including older people with lived experience of homelessness, service providers, peak advocacy bodies and private sector organisations, working together to address housing and homelessness related issues of older people.

Action Updates

New South Wales government handed down the State budget today. It was encouraging to see the additional investment to address rough sleeping in NSW with $57 million for Together Home program. However, it was disappointing to see the lack of investment on housing support for older people.

The Ageing on the Edge New South Wales Forum is calling on the NSW Government to deliver 5,000 additional social housing dwellings, improve access of older people to appropriate social and affordable housing, establish a state-wide housing information and support service for older people, increase security of tenure for renters, extend the eviction moratorium during the COVID-19 pandemic and expand rent support to impacted tenants.

Older women are the fastest growing group of homeless people in Australia. Kobi from HAAG will be speaking alongside Shadow Government Ministers at this online forum.

Airbnb has changed the global rental scene, by increasing prices and removing properties from long- term rental. Areas such as coastal New South Wales, Southern Queensland and Tasmania that attract tourism but also have large permanent renting populations are experiencing housing pressure as a result. The Northern Rivers region of NSW is one such place.

The Ageing on the Edge NSW Forum is a coali on of organisations working together towards housing justice for older people on low incomes.

Based on widespread consulta on with older people and the community sector in NSW, the Forum has adopted and promotes policy recommendations that are critical to addressing the needs of older people facing housing stress and homelessness.
