Housing stress 'dire' as elderly Canberra women resort to sleeping in cars
Women more than 80 years old are turning to Canberra's homeless services for shelter, forced out of housing by the ACT's rental market, low savings and family violence.
Homelessness services are reporting a rise in clients who are elderly women, some resorting to sleeping in cars and couch surfing for shelter before seeking help.

As hard as it is for young people to get a foot on the property ladder, it’s even harder for pensioners and low to middle income renters to get a foot in the door ... any door.
Private rental accommodation is now more unaffordable than owner-occupied. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, people who rent spend more of their income on housing than people with a mortgage.

Official statistics from 2012 put the number of people living without shelter in France at 141,500, an increase of 44% since 2001.
Broadly speaking, homelessness is a middle-aged problem. Almost half of people living on the street are between the ages of 30 and 49, compared with 26% of people over 18 and 25% over 50.

Imagine reaching the age of 55 and having to choose between couch surfing or sleeping in your car each night. This is the situation for thousands of older women in Australia.
Last year 1,618 women aged over 50 who presented at homelessness services were couch surfing according to Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data.
This number has risen by 83% in the last four years.

New Zealand not 'catching up' to social housing needs
The Salvation Army estimates New Zealand needs to build a minimum of 2000 social houses a year for at least the next decade just to meet demand.
The country's social housing stock needs to grow from 82,000 to more than 100,000 in the next decade. Another 2000 a year was the bare minimum that needed to be constructed and half of those were needed in Auckland.
