Retirement Village or the General Community? Downsizing Choices of Older Australians
Of the 18% of Australians 50 years of age and older who moved between 2006 and 2011, it is estimated that around half had downsized by number of bedrooms. The majority downsized into private housing in the general community and around one fifth into retirement villages.

How can we best design housing for Australia’s ageing population?
Few older Australians actually live in non-private housing such as nursing homes. Data from the 2011 Census reveals that 94% of Australians who are 65 or older still live in private housing. More than half live with a partner and another quarter live alone.
Australia’s current housing options are not future-proofed for its ageing population.

Why More Seniors Are Forming Their Own 'Villages'
Discusses the Beacon Hill example of the Village concept of housing for older people. A local group of independent seniors meet and support one other through the elder years. By pooling yearly membership fees, members of the village pay for a small staff that helps them find services like drivers, cleaners, and handymen in the local area.
